Shalom – Anna Darlene Edmondson
“Of the increase of His government and of His peace, there shall be no end” (Isa 9:7 NHEB)
Shalom is a traditional Jewish welcome that conveys a wish for ‘peace’. The Hebraic term signifies completeness, soundness, well-being, harmony, and tranquility for the total person. Hearing the greeting ‘peace be with you’, expresses a deep desire for entire wholeness within one’s spirit, soul, and body. Overall, shalom joins together those who are opposites. It’s used in both hellos and goodbyes with the hope of full goodness and prosperous welfare.
Another spelling, Shulam, denotes ‘paid for in advance’, perhaps referring to ‘the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world’ (Rev 13:8). The word ‘peace’ first appears in Genesis during the Abrahamic covenant (Gen 15:12-15). All believers are Abraham’s seed (descendants) and blessed through Christ (Gal 4:28). In essence, this peace comes from above and obtained by keeping our minds focused on God (Isa 26:3). Aptly, only true security is found in Him, “l lay down in peace and sleep safely” (Ps 4:8). According to the psalmist, praying for Jerusalem’s peace honors God (Ps 122:6).
Because Christ is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace (Isa 9:6) believers are ‘one’ with Him (John 17:21). Our entire personhood receives redemption from past, present, and future sins. In fact, it’s not our peace, but Jesus’ peace that keeps us intact “My peace I give to you” (John 14:27). God sent His Son for an exact purpose to heal the broken-hearted, set captives free, comfort mourners, give praise garments for heaviness and bestow beauty for ashes (Isa 61:1-3).
Oh Jesus, we perish without Your shalom. Be the inner protection in our souls and keep fear from destroying us. Make Your home in our hearts today. Amen.
