And He Saith Unto Him: Follow Me Stephen Thomas "And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him." (Matthew 9:9 KJV)
My son and I had an opportunity to cook dinner together. We gathered our ingredients and instructions, and we got started. The entire experience made me think about my relationship with God. My son and I read the instructions at least two times. We went item by item to make sure we had everything we needed.
I realized this experience mirrors my relationship with God. How many times has God given me specific instructions (read the Bible, attend church, pray more), only to have me alter them slightly? If the recipe calls for garlic, and I use lemons, it will not taste good. Likewise, when Jesus instructs me to follow Him, but I stop reading my Bible and praying, it will hurt our relationship.
When things don't go right, I look at God and wonder why my prayers are not answered. Look at the ingredients that Jesus used to make disciples. He didn’t lay out some elaborate dress code, a list of college courses, or assign a paper on discipleship. Instead, He told Matthew to follow Him. Matthew did what he was told. He did not seek to create an elaborate feast. Matthew simply followed Jesus' directions.
Dear God, I am thankful for the privilege to follow You. I believe that You will always lead me in the right direction and will never stop caring for me. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
