Trusting the Word of God – Toni Babcock
"Every word of God is pure; he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him," (Proverbs 30:5 KJV).
Contemplating this proverb, I might rightly conclude every word of man is not always pure, and they certainly don't shield. Human words are often tainted with evil intent, or hidden agendas. So how is it some feel it is safer to trust in the "sure" word of man over and above the sure word of God? A reluctance to hold God's word supreme would seem to render us less safe, more vulnerable, and weak. Proverbs goes on to say, "Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar," (Proverbs 30:6 KJV). That should give us pause before we place our faith in somebody else's words! Especially when we can find their teachings nowhere in the Bible.
As for me, I cannot allow anything to supersede God's Word in relevance or authority. It doesn't mean I never need outside help, or that every religious resource other than the Bible is suspect. I enjoy conferring with sources that are spiritually in tune with God's Word to help me in my walk; but it is God's Word alone I must learn to place my faith in. This is the surest way to 1.) be right with God, and 2.) do right through God. I can trust the Spirit of Christ to work out His will in my life through the Word. He died and rose again to make it possible.
God's promises and provision in Christ are sure. My goal is to cherish and believe the Bible above all. For me, the Bible stands apart because it isn't just the word of man, it is the Word of God.
