Count Your Blessings Karen Pourbabaee
“May God be gracious to us and bless us; may God’s face shine upon us.” Psalm 67:1 NAB
One of the first cool days of fall, I hung my metal sign “Count Your Blessings” on the brick wall of my covered patio. I was busy placing pumpkins and leaf garlands while my two year old grandson was reciting his “A-B-C’s” and pointing to that sign. I paused and announced, “It says ‘Count Your Blessings’. Do you know what that means?” He looked at me and whispered, “God.” It seems even a two year old instinctively knows blessings come from God.
The fall season typifies blessings; it is the season of harvest, of reaping what we’ve sown in faith. Every good thing is seen as a blessing from God, not mere luck or good karma, by the faithful. Especially this month and Thanksgiving Day, America reflects and thanks God.
A blessing is a gift of divine favor, given out of God’s great love and affection. God “favors” us as His children. To favor is described thus: to benefit, aid, promote, encourage, facilitate. God’s favoritism brings such blessing to our lives. Consider them and count them.
Then purpose to multiply them. Start with blessing God Himself as admonished in Psalm 103:1-2. Adore, worship, and praise Him for His many gifts of divine favor.
We are blessed to be a blessing. By prayer, words, and actions, we can bestow blessings on others. Extend God’s lovingkindness to the world around you.
In the invigorating fervor of fall, pause, count, and bless. Do not keep the gifts of God, they are meant to be given away. Selah.
