That Piece of Paper - Ken Ebright
"Believers who are poor should take pride that God has made them spiritually rich. Those who are rich should take pride that God has shown them that they are spiritually poor. The rich will die like a wild flower in the grass. The sun rises with burning heat and dries up the plants. The flower falls off, and its beauty is gone. In the same way the rich will die while they are still taking care of business." (James 1:9-11 NCV )
One day when I was young, I was washing the dishes after lunch, when my dad said, "Son, if your grades don't improve, you'll be a dishwasher the rest of your life." That statement hurt me because it made me feel like I was dumb. I remembered those words when I saw a family member graduate from college recently. It reinforced thoughts in my mind that I would never amount to anything, according to the world's standards. This world tends to measure success on good grades, having a Bachelor's Degree, or making a lot of money.
I accept that I have learning disabilities and that I am not the smartest person in the world. I never received my piece of paper (a college degree) and do not have a six-figure salary.
That college degree will not mean anything when I am on my death bed. The million-dollar home or the speed boat will not buy you a plot of land in Heaven. What I do have is the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. I invest my time in reading the Word and trying to reach the lost. I don't need the things of this world, because I have my eyes and heart set on Heaven.
