"…Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free," (John 8:32 KJV).
In the movie War Horse, a gallant war horse becomes tangled in long rolls of barbed wire that separate two opposing armies, until one soldier is daring enough to step out and untangle the fallen horse. A soldier from the opposite side sees his struggle, sets down his weapon, and steps in to help. All combat ceases as the war horse is set free.
As Christians, we sometimes act like enemy combatants, opposing one another while allowing the true mission of the gospel to become tangled in the barbed wire of our fears, our prejudices, and our particular persuasions. Tangled in this way, we begin to oppose one another, suspect one another, doubt one another, and resist one another. We begin to shoot one another down with words, and retreat behind our bunkers. In doing so, we forget what a Christian'strue mission is in the kingdom of God . It is not to prove we are right, it is to speak the gospel that sets people free. In order to set people free, the gospel cannot be held hostage by fear, prejudice, religious wrangling, and the particular persuasions of men.
The best way to contend for the faith of the gospel is to really know the gospel, live the gospel, and speak the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus does not ask us to live as hostile combatants always on the attack, but as people who serve the Lord. In obedience to Christ, fulfilling our mission, we can go in the strength of the Lord our God and allow Jesus to win.
