Why Can’t I? Stephen Thomas

It did not matter. We could be asking about getting “seconds” from dinner or having a hefty dessert. We could be asking about going out to a party or just going out to play. Our parents gave answers, and sometimes they simply said, “No”. Our reply was often, "Why can’t I?" To which they often replied, “Because I said so!”
Was it just their desire to be mean or to punish us? We could not understand why we couldn’t do something that we wanted to do. What was the harm? Would there be a bad influence at those parties? Were they concerned about the impact overeating may have on our body?
The Apostle Paul dealt with this at the Corinthian church. They found it hard to understand why they couldn’t do something if that something wasn’t hurting anyone. As adults, we can do whatever we want to do, but need to remind ourselves that everything comes with a consequence, good or bad. Don’t allow your freedom to become your downfall.
Father, thank you for your permissible will and also for your love that knows no borders and knows no boundaries. Bless us and keep us in your care; we pray. Amen.
