"Why are you so afraid?" Jesus' gentle rebuke to his disciples when he calmed the storm echoes down to me today. "Don't you have any faith?"
These simple questions are astonishing in light of the situation in which his disciples found themselves. A squall had blown up on the Sea of Galilee, which was customary. But this one must have been a monster: The waves swamped their boat so much that they were truly in danger of losing their lives.
"Why are you so afraid?"
"I am afraid because if this rope I am frantically grasping breaks, I will be swept overboard and possibly drowned."
"I am afraid because I don't know what the future holds."
"I am afraid because my children are making bad decisions."
"I am afraid because I don't know if I can live without her."
"I am afraid because I cannot be in complete control of my own life or the lives of my loved ones."
"I am afraid because I might try and fail."
Jesus is calling us to put our trust in him. And while I don't believe that he always chooses to remove us from our problem, I do believe we can trust him to be there with us.
