When God created man, he provided him with all that he needed to survive and thrive. He also told Adam what he was supposed to do and even graciously provided him with a helper to support him. Everything that was important for man’s survival was clearly spelled out for him. God even told Adam what he could eat and what he was to avoid. However, I always wondered why God did not mention the devil and how crafty he could be. That detail seemed unimportant to the Lord.
I wondered if the story would have been different if the man and his wife knew about the devil. But I doubt it because we are currently aware of the devil and his schemes, yet we still often listen to him and disobey God. I believe God didn’t tell Adam about the devil because obedience to God isn’t really about the existence of the devil and his influence or even man’s desires. Obedience to God is about man understanding who God is and trembling at His word. Trembling at the word of God is putting God’s word above every desire, word, thing, person or being. If we tremble at God’s word and understand what He tells us will always come to pass, we will be able to live a more fruitful Christian life. We will not only avoid certain wrong turns, but we will be able to have more faith in God as we trust Him to work in our lives.
