Hidden Treasures – Jennifer Woodley
‘I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.’ Isaiah 45:3.
Hidden deep below the surface of our lives are hidden treasures. Riches stored in the dark depths of our soul waiting to be brought forth into the light of day. Sometimes it takes the painful experiences of life to discover the treasures hidden within. Perhaps that is why God allows turbulent and difficult times, so that we might dig down deep into the depths and discover the treasures He has placed within each of us.
Hiddenness is about discovering wealth, like un-mined seams of precious gems. We uncover a rich bounty of treasure in ourselves, placed there by God as we experience the work of suffering and struggle in our lives. What are the unique riches He has hidden in each of us that are waiting to be uncovered in unpromising times? Is it peace, joy, laughter, compassion, kindness, celebration, wisdom or insight? Rather than run from our pain, loneliness, sickness or difficulty, let’s embrace it, knowing that as we work through these struggles, jewels of estimable worth will be ours.
‘God of treasure, you have hidden rich and beautiful things in me. Please bring them to light, so that I and others may enjoy them. It takes hard work to reap the blessings of these treasures. Help me to persevere and trust that these gifts within are worth the discovering. Amen.’
