Trusting in the Goodness of God Susan Barnes
"I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me." Psalm 131:2
Carrying a squirming child who is determined to have his own way is difficult and exhausting for both the mother and the child. But carrying a child who is prepared to relax in the arms of their mother and trust her is peace and contentment. In the same way, we find rest by trusting ourselves to God.
Instead of struggling to achieve what we think is best, we rest in the knowledge that God knows best, and we leave him to determine the circumstances of our lives. One of the reasons we struggle is because we aren’t convinced that God has our best interests at heart. We aren’t absolutely sure we can really trust God. Recently I read a book by Mark Buchanan called, "Your God is too safe" where Mark states that what we really want is a God who is safe, who isn't going to challenge our comfort zones or insist that we continue to grow in him. But instead, we have a God who isn’t safe yet loves us passionately, unconditionally, and eternally.
When we get beyond trusting that God will bless our circumstances, we can trust in the ultimate goodness of God. As we reflect on the cross and consider the thought: "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all …" (Romans 8:32). We can conclude that a God who wouldn’t spare his own Son for us can be trusted with our lives.
