Behind the Scenes – Jennifer Woodley ‘After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases.’ Luke 8:1-2 (NIV).
Though the disciples had a more prominent, public position, the women who went with Jesus, had no less a vital role. Jesus had lifted these women up from degradation and servitude to the joy of fellowship and meaningful service as they traveled with Him. In this passage we catch a glimpse of them as they helped to support the disciples and Jesus ‘out of their own means.’ (Luke 8:3).
The ministry of those in the foreground is often supported by those whose work is less visible, but just as essential. In fact, the smooth running of the more public positions depends upon those who work behind the scenes. Jesus and His twelve had their financial needs met by these women, so their role was crucial to the welfare of the men.
If our ministry is behind the scenes, we mustn’t underestimate the importance we play in supporting those up front. Whatever resources we offer are a much needed part of the ministry. Those who serve morning tea, set up chairs for Sunday service, organize flowers or clean up afterward play as important a role as those who preach, sing or play a musical instrument. One role is no more important than another.
‘Father, thank you for the resources I have to bring to the Body of Christ. I want to serve you faithfully so that your people will be blessed and you will be honored. Amen.’
