Let God’s Word Read You Karen Pourbabaee “The command of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eyes.” Psalm 19: 9 NAB
Self-actualization is the ultimate search for today’s “me” generation. We all want to know who we are and what the future holds. Horoscopes and psychic readings abound. Being enlightened is rather savvy in our current age, just as in past centuries. The Enlightenment was an 18th century European philosophical movement characterized by rationalism, an impetus to learn, and a spirit of empiricism in social and political thought. Enlighten is defined as revealing truths to, or informing. Synonyms give further insight: advise, apprise, edify, and educate. The Bible has something to say about enlightenment, too.
God’s plan is that His Word enlighten our eyes. While we are admonished to read God’s Word, we should humbly allow God’s Word to read us. “Indeed, the Word of God is living and effective, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) It is His Word that gives light and imparts understanding. (Psalm 119:130) With enlightenment, the Word continues to work within the believer. We are enlightened to subsequently be transformed. “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 2:16-17)
As you read God’s Word, linger a while so that it may also read you. Meditate upon His precepts and allow them to reveal truth in your heart. As one who belongs to God, be enlightened by His Word, that you may also be equipped for every good work.
