Divine Supplements - Karen Pourbabaee “…make every effort to supplement your faith…” 2 Peter 1:5 NAB
Health-conscious people are savvy about their supplements. Multivitamins for insurance against a sometimes-inadequate diet. Omega oils are for heart health. Turmeric is for brain health. The list goes on. The natural health movement espouses the use of vitamin and herbal supplements to enhance our diet for optimal health and disease prevention.
Faith-conscious people require supplements, too. Peter instructs us to make every effort to supplement our faith. Becoming a believer is not all there is to faith. We are meant to become a maturing believer, a disciple who follows Christ, submitting to a process of spiritual growth. Peter prescribes divine supplements to help us to do just that. 2 Peter 1:5-7 continues: “…supplement your faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love.”
Spiritual growth happens with deliberate effort and discipline. Each supplement complements the other; take a daily dose of each to prosper. Virtue is moral excellence or goodness. It derives from the Hebrew hayil meaning strength and ability. We need this strength called virtue to attain Christ-likeness. Knowledge implies knowing God better and knowing His Word to guide thinking, behavior, and practical wisdom. Self-control means going against feelings and impulses to attain higher spiritual goals.
Enduring hardship and distress to follow Christ develops endurance. It refers to perseverance, steadfastness, and patience in all our Christian living. Living in reverence to God and being aware of Him in every aspect of life is characteristic of devotion or godliness. Having mutual affection means possessing brotherly kindness and self-sacrificing love. Love, the very nature of God, is our crowning achievement. Our faith must manifest God’s love. Be faith savvy. For optimal spiritual health, take your daily doses as the Word prescribes.
