Waiting Upon Our God – Toni Babcock
Shortly before he ascended into heaven, Jesus commanded His disciples to “wait” for the promise of the Father; which was the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
Why wait? When God commands us to wait, we are prevented from jumping ahead with our own plans and implementing them in our own power. Waiting takes patience, humility, perseverance, and faith – virtues the followers of Jesus would find indispensable in living the new life Jesus initiated for them.
Jesus left His disciples to cast themselves upon His Word and promise and wait. He said, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 KJV)
The living God, Creator of heaven and earth, is the infinite source of all the power we need in the service of Christ Jesus our King. When we wait for the promise, God supplies the power.
“Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31 KJV). |
