Have you ever made a promise to God that you did not keep? I have. Ecclesiastes 5: 6 says “Don't let your mouth make you sin. And don't defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved.” While I was making my bed, which strangely is where the Holy Spirit sometimes speaks, I was repenting for a promise I had made and broken. I felt very sad, and I wondered if I had made God so angry that He might wipe me out. How would He deal with me? He reminded me instantly that Peter once made a promise to the Lord, that even if he had to die with Jesus, he would never disown Him (Matt. 26: 35). Did Jesus punish Peter? Wipe him out? Destroy everything he had achieved?

Not so. He simply asked Peter to acknowledge his love, three times. One time for every denial. What a gentle and loving call back to the ministry for which Peter had been trained. No scourging, not even a rebuke. Jesus did not come to condemn the world, but to save it. He knows we humans are dust and are going to fail. That’s why He has already paid the penalty for us, and for our broken promises.

 
Father, I am so glad I can come to the throne in the righteous robe of Jesus and find mercy, grace and forgiveness. You have shown me that I am not righteous by what I do. I'm righteous by what Jesus did. You are no longer angry at me when I'm wearing His garment of righteousness. Amen.
