Remember Lot’s Wife – Jennifer Woodley Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.’ Luke 17:33 (NIV)
God led Lot and his wife away from the burning city of Sodom to a new place, a new life and a new level of trust in Him. Yet, Lot’s wife resisted. Yearning for the past she turned and looked back. She failed to let go and in holding onto what was behind, she lost everything.
Sadly, Lot and his wife experienced the truth of the above Scripture in entirely different ways. In faith, Lot released his old life and entered into a new life with God, experiencing the abundant blessings the Father had in store for him. However, it was not so for his wife. Clinging to the past, she was unwilling to turn completely away from all that was secure and safe. Because of this, she lost her life.
We cannot look back longingly at sin while trying to move forward with God. We can’t make progress with God as long as we are holding on to pieces of our old life. Are we attempting to hold back part of our life from God? Are we seeking to protect ourselves by grasping at what is safe and secure? If so, we will miss out on the blessed life He offers.
The Christian journey doesn’t promise to be one of safety and security, but one of adventure, risk taking and uncertainty. But with God as our guide, it is far more satisfying than whatever we leave behind. Remember Lot’s wife. Let’s look ahead and move forward confidently into what is yet to come.
