I’ve Got the Power – Emmanuella Ellis …because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4
For so long, I had an incomplete view of 1 John 4:4. I was not confused about who lived inside of me or who lived in the world. Surely, Jesus lives in me, and the devil is in the world. And I didn’t need convincing about who was greater or more powerful. But I had a limited view of the power of Jesus in me.
In the world, the devil causes so much chaos in the lives of people with violence, destruction, death, and losses that are all his doing. His actions are always centered on tempting us to doubt God, disobey and sin. And so, every time I thought about this verse, it was in line with Jesus being able to deliver us from the after-effects of sin in this world, and that is absolutely true.
Today though, I realize that He who lives in me is not only powerful enough to deliver me after I fall into sin but powerful enough to give me the ability to stay out of sin in the first place, to walk in victory. What do I do when it seems like I cannot resist doing something displeasing to the Lord when the enemy makes it appear ok, and the urge is overwhelming? I remember I have greater power in me than he who is in the world. A power great enough to resist and overcome that sinful urge, greater than the power tempting me from the outside. Then, I hold on to that truth and let the Holy Spirit take over.
