God’s Favour – Jennifer Woodley ‘God has looked favourably on His people.’ Luke 7:16 (NRSV)
At the right time, God led His son, Jesus, to walk past a poor widow and the funeral procession of her young son. Jesus saw her great need, felt compassion and gave her back the precious lad. She was not left destitute and uncared for by Jesus.
God looks favourably on His people. What are our real needs? We can freely bring, not our whims, but our genuine needs to the One who looks with favour on us. Like the widow in the story, we are not forgotten or cast aside. He will not leave us destitute, but graciously provides where we are lacking.
The widow did not even utter her need to Jesus. He sensed her suffering, felt compassion and reached out to help. He hears our silent longings and understands our emptiness and grief. Trust Jesus to fill the lonely spaces in your life. His hand is willing and able to heal. A broken and contrite heart is what He looks for, a person who depends solely on God to meet their need. One who knows there is salvation in no other name, but Jesus.
Let us allow Him to look upon us in all our brokenness. He will look upon us with favour. Dear Heavenly Father, I can find no hope, no help for my need but in the name of Jesus. Look with mercy and favour upon me this day, and as you provided for the widow, please provide for me. Thank you.
