What is Truth? By Robert Schaetzle “When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.” John 18:38b NKJV
Pilate asked our Lord, “what is truth” not realizing truth was standing right before him. After all that Jesus had done in His ministry, could Pilate not see this was not a mere man? Had God blinded the understanding of Pilate, or was the ‘Power of Darkness’ having his say.
Yet Pilate was uneasy about the identity of Jesus because of his wife’s warning. Therefore, he pronounced Jesus not guilty and resolved to have nothing to do with judging our Lord. In the end, Satan had blinded Pilate just enough to ignore the truth, please man, and not stop the execution. Something God knew would happen, using it for the good of mankind.
Just like then, Satan works to blind our hearts every chance he gets. His desire is to create doubt about the truth of God’s Word and to keep us from discerning God’s spiritual prompting. He does not want us to reflect God’s truth in our lives.
This is such a powerful reminder to take hold of God’s truth for the strength to defeat the plans of the enemy in our lives. Jesus tells us that abiding in His word is key.
“If you abide in my word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8: 31b, 32
The temptation to please man was a stumbling block for Pilate, so he ignored the truth. Today, the truth still stands, knocking at the door of our heart, waiting for us to pay attention. Yet, temptation is always there to ignore the truth like Pilate did. What will you do?
