What True Devotion Is – Harriett Ford
Early will I seek thee, Psalm 63: 1 (KJV) My little dog Lady looks for me every morning first thing when she gets out of her sleeping crate. If she doesn't see me at once, she heads for the back room where I sometimes read. She doesn't stop to eat her breakfast, play with a favorite toy, or even go outdoors for her morning break.
Clearly, Lady shows her devotion to me.
I asked myself, what's the first thing I do in the morning? Do I turn on the TV, check the local news, read emails?
The thought followed: what is more important than seeking the Lord first, seeking His kingdom and His righteousness? I see the biblical pattern. King David laid His heart before the Lord in the mornings. Jesus also arose long before dawn to spend time in prayer.
I began to open my Bible first thing in the morning and offer my day to the Lord. Was I putting myself under a ritual that could become legalistic? Or worse--trying to establish my own righteousness? But soon I looked forward to reading God's Word and then praying the Word back to Him.
Instead of an obligation, this time with the Lord became a joy. I delight myself in the Lord. The promise follows. He gives me the desire of my heart (Psa. 37:4).
My little dog taught me what true devotion is. Early will I seek You, my Lord and shepherd. Lead me in the path of righteousness. I am comforted by Your rod and staff which keep me from straying. I fear no evil for You are my delight. Amen.
