Adonai! - Karen Pourbabaee
“Seek the Lord while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near.” Isaiah 55:6
In Old Testament times, the purpose of one’s name wasn’t merely for physical identification, but for identity. God reveals Himself through His names, displaying His nature. God’s name, Adonai, was first used in Genesis 15:2 and over 400 times in scripture. Adonai is Hebrew, meaning Lord, and plural, suggestive of the Trinity.
God’s names also express His personal relationship with us. Adonai/Lord signifies ownership, God being our rightful owner. In Biblical times, a purchased slave, unlike a servant, was part of the master’s family and awarded full protection, care, and sometimes, inheritance. We were purchased by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, and God has now become our Lord and Master, our authority and provider. “…you are not your own. For you have been purchased at a price.” (I Corinthians 6:19-20)
Who is God to you? Is He some distant entity? A Father you know, but refuse to bow to? Truth is, we all need lordship over our lives…a directing of our hearts to the Lord, aligning our will with His, relinquishing control. Attempting to rule ourselves (and others) usually leads to chaos. We think we have our best interests at heart, but we really need God’s interests in our hearts. He has the better plan, and His plan offers peace.
Have you felt the Lord’s presence this Christmas? Seek Jesus while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. If you don’t know Him, ask Him into your heart. If you do, bow to Him as Lord. As the New Year dawns, kneel and worship Him as Adonai!
