‘The father realized that this was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.”’ John 4:53 (NRSV)
While Jesus was in Cana he met a royal official from Capernaum whose son was dying. The man later returned home to find his son well. The father was told by his servants that his son was healed at 1.00 pm on the day he was away. In fact, he realized that this was the same hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.”
Why did the father realize this? Perhaps he took the time to ponder the whole encounter and the timing of the words with Jesus. By stopping to notice, the father had not missed the miracle that Jesus performed.
When we fail to stop and reflect, we are liable to miss miracles. It takes intention on our part to cease from racing onto the next event, and instead pause to consider God’s activity in the individual happenings of each day.
If we charge through the hours of the day, forgetting to consider His involvement in each specific part, we will miss noticing grace moments. We will forget to be thankful and neglect to remember that life is not ours to take credit for, but His to give glory to.
We are called to live deeply with God. This journey will be most satisfying when we take increments of space through the day to stop and notice where God is moving in our lives. Stop, look, and reflect, just as the father did in this story, in order to not miss the miracle of His presence everywhere.
