The Merchant's Purchase Jennifer Woodley
"on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it." Matthew 13:46 (NRSV)
Imagine a merchant, a dealer in fine pearls, meets an old fisherman, who takes from under his cloak, a small box containing the most beautiful pearl the merchant had ever seen. He deeply desires the pearl for himself, but can he afford it? He considers and then decides to sell everything he has in order to make this pearl his very own. Jesus said His kingdom was like that - worth finding and keeping more than anything else in the world.
But perhaps there is another way of looking at this story. Could God be the merchant who sees each person as the pearl of great value? Even in our sinful state, even before we knew God or had chosen to follow His son, Jesus, God looked at each of us and saw us as pearls worth purchasing. In exchange, He chose to give His dearest possession, Jesus, to buy His greatest creation, humankind.
God sees each of us as beautiful pearls of great price. The merchant-God gave His best for what is worth much. Can we allow God who purchased us at the greatest personal cost, to love us deeply? Be still in His presence, letting His loving gaze fall upon us, just as the merchant might gaze admiringly at the pearl lying in his hand. Let God reveal our value, our worth, our importance to Him, and then in return, we can offer ourselves to Him with adoration and thanks, for the price He paid for our purchase.
