Surrounded by friends at a barbecue, I found myself absorbed in my smartphone, oblivious to the lively conversation around me. It hit me later that I had missed out on good fellowship, and even worse, I had not given my full attention to my friends. I thought about our high-tech world, and how it enables us to connect to people anytime and anywhere but also hinders us from human interaction. It's not too surprising that loneliness has become an epidemic among the young and old alike.
In our tightly scheduled lives, it's rare to sit down and have a real conversation with someone. Life can get busy, and time is moving fast. But God created us to be relational, and we need personal interaction with other people. (Genesis 2:18) We need smiles, hugs, handshakes, and good conversation. Even a good marriage or friendship needs time, attentiveness, and laughter. We need Christian fellowship, a time to share what Christ has done for us, and to encourage and pray for one another. The benefits of technology are numerous, but it can't replace human interaction. Jesus is our role model for everything in life. In His earthly ministry, He went about doing good and gave His time and attention to those He encountered.
Heavenly Father, help us to slow down and give people our time and attention. In our hurry-up, technological world, help us to be more like Jesus. In Jesus' name. Amen
