Motherly Advice - Karen Pourbabaee “His mother said to the servers, ‘Do whatever He tells you’.” John 2:5 NAB
Even as adults, we still hear the echo of our mother’s advice. Her words, though disciplinary in nature at times, were words founded in love and care. How much more so the words of Jesus own mother, Mary! After all, she is a woman full of grace, and the one who mothered Christ. Let us heed her words.
There was a dilemma at the infamous wedding in Cana. Mary’s response was to command the servers to “Do whatever He tells you.” She admonished them to hear Jesus’ words and do them. Even when they didn’t make any earthly sense. Even when they seemed impossible. For she knows her Son. She knows He will take earthly nonsense and create heavenly wonders. Thus the plain old water became divine wine, Jesus’ first miracle.
In those five simple words is great wisdom. Hear and do. A template for faith in action. It begins with listening. We are instructed: “…everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak…” ((James 1:19) And Jesus promises if we listen, we will hear. “My sheep hear My voice. I know them and they follow Me.” (John 10:27) What results in truly hearing the Word is faith. “Thus, faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) We become equipped to follow the Good Shepherd. We have heard, now we can do.
James’ exhortation continues in verse 1:22: “Be doers of the Word and not hearers only.” We exhibit our faith by doing. In doing, we are blessed. “Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and observe it.” (Luke 11:28)
Mary points us to Jesus. Let us listen.
