Where Is Your Treasure? - Marlene Custer
Have you ever been on a treasure hunt? I can still feel the excitement of following clues from location to location and then finally — finding the treasure. I am one of the best cheerleaders for fortune-seekers at the beach. They stroll along, head down, swaying metal detectors across the sand — listening for that special signal. I keep hoping they find something good!
According to Readers Digest, a wealthy casino heir buried a silver collection worth several million dollars somewhere on his ranch. Though he died over twenty years ago, there are still seekers that continue to search the area. There are also treasure-seekers that still search the area from Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay all the way south to the Cayman Islands, looking for Blackbeard’s treasures. He was executed in 1718, and no one has been successful yet.
What if you found a treasure? What would you do with it? Put it in a bank, bury it, or find another safe place? Jesus admonished his disciples “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven...” (Matthew 6:19-20 ESV)
How do we store treasure in Heaven? Paul writes in his first letter to Timothy that he should instruct the rich “…to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,” (1 Timothy 6:18 ESV). In this way, they would lay up treasure for themselves in Heaven. I’ll let you think about how you can fulfill this charge.
“Father, help me be responsible for the treasures you have given me. Guide me in using them for what will benefit your kingdom and eternity.”
