When the Difficulty is Forgiveness Toni. M Babcock
“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience…” (Hebrews 10:12a KJV).
It’s difficult to forgive people who have harmed us knowingly or unknowingly, particularly when it comes to the people we expected more from. But what if we expect more from ourselves and fail miserably? What if our behavior or rash decisions caused irreparable harm in some aspect of our lives or someone else’s? Can we forgive ourselves and move on? Is it even possible?
We can and should — and by the grace of God, it is possible.
Being a believer in Jesus doesn’t make us immune to the possibility of stumbling in our walk of faith and making poor decisions—some that even change the trajectory of our lives. The test comes with how we reclaim the ground we’ve lost to the enemy. That’s where the redemptive work of the cross comes in because it’s God’s work and His ground and only He can renew our faith and make it flourish again in Christ.
God proclaims “…I the LORD build the ruined places…” (Ezekiel 36:36 KJV), and “…I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten…” (Joel 2:25 KJV).
Clearly, if we refuse to forgive ourselves, even after confessing our sin and making amends – the problem isn’t with God, it’s with us. He promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,” (1 John 1:9 KJV).
Try replacing all self-recrimination with God’s mercy, grace and forgiveness. He’s still at work transforming lives and He wants to set you permanently free.
