What We Need Right Now - Jennifer Woodley ‘You silence the roaring of the seas, the roaring of the waves, the tumult of the peoples.’ Psalm 65:7 (NRSV)
When the world is in an uproar, Jesus commands silence. When people become anxious and despondent, Jesus brings calm and hope. When fear grips the heart of a nation, Jesus speaks words of peace. When we are drowning in darkness, Jesus breathes life and light into lost, lifeless places.
Our Lord guides His people back onto paths of peace and refreshing. This happens only as we turn our eyes upon Him. Only as we look fully into His wonderful face will the rising tide of fear and confusion diminish. Only then.
Wars and disease and political unrest arise to distract God’s people. The enemy uses these disturbing events to lure our eyes elsewhere. With diverted attention, we grow weak and vulnerable. We lose sight of our firm Anchor, our Refuge and our Strong Tower. The Prince of Peace no longer governs our hearts.
But our Lord encourages His people to stay focused on Him. To remember His goodness. Remember His grace. Remember that He is the Sovereign Lord and that in repentance and rest we find salvation, strength and peace. The One who commanded the roaring seas and angry winds to be quiet, is the same One who will settle our distressed hearts and establish peace therein once more.
‘Heavenly Father, forgive me for being drawn away from what I know in my heart is true. You are above all things. Even all the wickedness and wrongdoing in the world. Help me to keep my eyes firmly fixed on you, so that in you I will have peace.’
