What Are You Serving Today? Karen Pourbabaee “A good man thinks before he speaks.” (Proverbs 15:28 LB)
Words are like containers. A simple, but revealing statement I heard on a recent podcast. The minister continued by citing, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” (Prov. 18:21) The greatest source of this truth is discovered in Proverbs. It’s worth a short review.
“A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse one crushes the spirit.” (Prov. 15:4 NAB)
“A fountain of life is the mouth of the just.” (Prov. 10:11 NAB)
“Kind words are like honey-enjoyable and healthful.” (Prov. 16:24 LB)
“The mouth of the just yields wisdom.” (Prov. 10:31 NAB)
“Wise words bring many benefits.” (Prov. 12:14)
“The words of the wise soothe and heal.” (Prov. 12;18)
The question to ask yourself often is, what am I filling my container with? That includes words spoken to yourself as well as others. The ability to use words is a unique and powerful gift of God, therefore you should think before you speak. What are you imparting into your life and others with the power of your words? Is your container a fountain of life? Could someone find those many benefits like joy, health, wisdom, and a soothing peace within it? Or does the overflow of your container yield a crushing of the spirit? A death blow.
“The lips of the righteous feed many.” (Prov. 10:21 NAS) Just as Jesus fed the five thousand starving ones on the hillside, we, too, are to follow in His footsteps and feed others. We have precious containers that can be a blessing or a curse. What are you serving today?
