Weeding the Garden of Faith – Toni Babcock
“…Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us…” (Hebrews 12:1 KJV)
Weeding an overgrown garden in the heat of summer is never easy. After an hour or two, it’s tempting to just remove the weeds on the surface of the soil without digging out the roots — you know, just yank out what’s visible so you can get back in the house for a bowl of ice cream and your favorite show. This has its consequences, however. Those pesky weeds just grow back thicker and deeper in a week or two and weaken a crop that will only result in a meager harvest if not attended to.
Life can be a lot like that — it has its ‘besetting sins’ that weaken us, and as long as our feet are planted in the dirt down here, we’re going to have to deal with them. We can take shortcuts, trying to weed ‘the garden of faith’ halfway by removing only what’s on the surface, but if we don’t do the work of getting to the root of the problem, with what threatens to undo our fruitfulness for Jesus over time, it will only make for a stunted harvest in the end.
Think about what might be your besetting sins in the ‘garden’ of faith. The harvest belongs to Jesus. He would have us get to the root of all that hinders — and remove them. Help us, Lord. Deliver us from evil, so in time we may deliver a bountiful harvest for You.
