Unshaken in a Shaken World - Karen Pourbabaee
“I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 16:8 NAS
As the last moments of consciousness faded, I meditated upon this verse. In my heart and mind, the Lord was standing at my right hand, alongside the anesthetist preparing me for surgery. Those words instilled in me an unshakeable peace. He was with me as His Word promised. I’ve returned to this Word the Lord gave me to pray back then many times over.
Are you stressed, scattered, unsettled, shaken? We truly are living in a shaken world, where real peace is illusive. Where anxiety assaults us. Where fear fragments our peace. Where rest is ruined. How can we be unshaken in a shaken world? Let us walk with King David, in Psalm 16, in his path from fear to peace, instability to security, anxiety to joy.
In distress, this mighty king pleads, “Preserve me, O God…” (v.1) He knew who to turn to. He knew who to talk to. His lament was to the God he knew. At his first call, he remembers who God is: “In You, I take refuge.” (v.1) No doubt; God was his refuge.
“I will bless the Lord who counseled me; indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.” (v.7) Again, he turns rightly to the Lord, blessing Him, because He knows Him to be a trusted counselor, the One who instructs him and guides him out of troubles. David also pictures the Lord at his side, setting Him continually before him. (v.8)
“Therefore, my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will dwell securely.” (v.9) A shaken David turned rightly, talked boldly, and trusted completely. It’s not a passive procedure. We must take action. Following David’s example leads to peace, security, and joy. Be unshaken in a shaken world!
