Though the Earth Give Way - Marlene Custer
We were living in northern Thailand the year of the 2004 Tsunami. The shifting of the tectonic plates that took place deep beneath the Indian Ocean rattled most of the country. Waves, some as high as 100 feet raced towards the shores of Southeast Asia. Nearly 230,000 people lost their lives. It has been declared one of the deadliest disasters in modern history.
Sometimes an upheaval occurs in our lives that is just as devastating to us as a tsunami. We are overwhelmed and not sure if we can even continue living. It is in such times that God’s Word can comfort us and give us the assurance that we can still trust in His goodness. Our focus must remain on Christ. Isaiah urged his listeners, “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord is an everlasting rock.” Psalm 46 proclaims, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”
Habakkuk 3:17-18 was particularly meaningful to me during a difficult time. “Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines…and the fields yield no food…and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.”
“Father, please strengthen my trust in You. Help me keep anchored to you no matter how turbulent the circumstances may be in my life. Thank you for your promises. Amen.”
