Thorns Resisted – HL Ford

“Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:11-12)

The unseen kingdoms of darkness and light have a great influence on the world. In the book of Acts, Saul, (later known as Paul) encountered evil spirits from early in his ministry. He dealt directly with the demonic realm when Elymas the sorcerer sought to turn Sergius Paulus, a deputy in Paphos, away from the faith. Paul understood at once it was a spiritual attack, and pronounced a curse of blindness on Elymas for “a season.” (Acts 13:8-12 NIV) Paul was harassed by the kingdom of darkness throughout his ministry — Satan incited angry mobs to hate, persecute, imprison, whip, and beat him over, and over again.

In Philippi, Paul encountered a slave girl possessed by a demon. He exorcised the “spirit of python” from her which deprived her of her fortune-telling abilities. This angered her owners who were making money off her skills. The owners stirred up the crowd against Paul and Silas to stop them from preaching; then had them sent to jail.

Throughout his Christian life, Paul suffered from both a physical ‘thorn’ as well as a spiritual ‘thorn’ of persecution — but God gave him sufficient grace to endure it all. God also sent angels to rescue Paul from prison, a storm at sea, a serpent’s deadly bite, and more.

Beloved, when there are “thorns” attacking our flesh and spirit, we also have angels to rescue us, along with the promises of God. After all, we are no longer citizens of the dark kingdom. We abide in the kingdom of Light!

Father, I thank You for giving Your angels charge over me to deliver me from the evil one. I will not allow the thorns to distract me from the works You have appointed me to do. Amen.
