The Threshing Sledge – Jennifer Woodley
‘See, I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff.’ Isaiah 41:15 (NIV)
Isaiah wrote these words at the time of the Babylonian captivity of Jerusalem (587-538 BC). He wrote to the Israelites who were surrounded by many nations that did not acknowledge Yahweh. These were nations whom God’s people held in fear and trembling. They were powerful and could easily crush the Israelites into slavery and submission.
Though they were a small nation, God instructed His people to rise up in His strength and ‘thresh’ the mountains and hills that towered around them. God promised to help His people by making them into a threshing sledge, powerful enough to conquer their enemies.
The reference to mountains and hills can be considered metaphors for our fears and frustrations. They are the things that threaten us. What are the towering obstacles that hold us back from serving God? If we allow them, they can reduce us to slavery and submission.
God gives us the responsibility of doing something ourselves about those faithless fears and worldly anxieties that hold us back. But we don’t have to do this alone. We have God’s promise of holding our hand and of helping us. By stretching out our hand in faith we receive the strength and encouragement of God’s love to deal with our mountains and hills.
‘Father, you have equipped me to be a threshing sledge to overcome the fears and anxieties that seek to overpower me. Help me to remember that your power in me is stronger than anything else. Thank you.’
