The Stories We Believe – Jennifer Woodley
‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NRSV)
As a little girl, I was told an old adage: ‘Good, better, best, never let it rest, until your good is better and your better is the best.’ Though these words may sound innocent enough, they had a devastating effect upon me through my teenage years and then into adult life. For a personality who naturally doesn’t settle for anything but the best, these words led me from determination to performance to drivenness and on-wards to perfectionism. Words that may inspire one to try harder, ultimately drove me to burnout.
The stories we believe and cling to as children can come back to bite us later. Good, better, best, never let it rest. Rest? What was that? No space for rest if I want to be the best. And that’s what God wants, isn’t it – our best? No! God wants us, not our best.
God loves us just as we are. With our shortcomings. With our failures. With our inadequacies. God is not looking for a perfect version of you or me. Not even the best version. God loves us in our imperfect state. His grace covers our imperfections. God sees us as we truly are and says, “You are enough, come to me as you are.” Let’s cease our efforts, our striving to earn God’s approval to be the best. We're loved, accepted and forgiven just as we are.
‘Heavenly Father, your grace frees me from having to be the best. Thank you that I can rest in you this day, just as I am. Amen.’
