Jesus exposed the spiritual component of censoring an individual with the goal of making them feel disgraced as both destructive and wrong. He said "You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults his brother or sister, will be subject to the court. Whoever says, 'You fool!' will be subject to hellfire." (Matthew 5:21-22 CSB) (‘You fool’ meaning literally ‘empty one.’)
None of us are God, so we should never feel as if we can indiscriminately use God’s gavel as if we were. It’s not going to change anyone’s mind. It will only bring the hammer down on ourselves as others choose not to want to get to know us or listen to what we have to say — and that’s the real tragedy.
Our country is being torn apart by tribalism. All the self-righteous ‘tar and feathering’ with words we see on social media has got to stop if our country is going to heal.
The good news is, it’s possible to get ideas across in constructive ways without censoring people in the process. We can expose what we believe to be disgraceful without making people feel as if they were a disgrace.
Perhaps a good rule of thumb to secure a right position is this: If I cannot address another person with wisdom and the tenderhearted love of God, knowing I myself have failed in judgment on a number of occasions – perhaps I should simply keep my opinions to myself.
