Sin No More – Jennifer Woodley
“No one who abides in Him sins” 1 John 3:6 (NRSV)
The closer we are to Christ the more we are free from the power of sin or the desire to live in a way that displeases God. Jesus always did what pleased the Father because He abided with Him (John 8:29). In Christ, there is no sin (1 John 3:5) and so as we abide in Him, we will not sin.
Our hearts won’t condemn us and whatever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight (1 John 3 21-22). After all, that’s what abiding in Christ is all about. In obedience, as we abide in Him in whom there is no sin, Jesus’ life is lived out in us by the power of the Spirit and He equips us for a life in which we always do the things pleasing to Him.
God removes even the very desire to engage in sinful habits that He no longer wants us to be a part of and we are amazed at how little we think of them again. God’s grace changes our life, sometimes dramatically and quickly, other times slowly but consistently. And the fruit? As we abide, as we stay close to our Life Source, as we cooperate with the Spirit, life becomes rich and full, good and right.
Let’s determine each day to yield ourselves to the God of peace who enables us to do every good work that is pleasing to Him. Then we will know that God does indeed work righteousness in those who abide in Him.
