Seduction – Jennifer Woodley ‘If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.’ 2 Peter 2:20 (NIV).
Sharon had lived a wild life. The sordid details are best left unnamed, but everywhere our imaginations could roam, Sharon was a part of it, until she met Christ. He captured her heart and then, almost overnight it seemed, Sharon was converted into a passionate follower of Jesus. That’s when I met her. Sharon was devoted to Jesus and it was her vibrant love for Him that drew me to Christ too. For many years, we were the very best of friends with each other and Jesus. Christ had swept our hearts clean and put our lives in order.
Then something went horribly wrong. Jesus explained it this way in Luke 11. When the departed evil spirit returns to the home transformed and made clean by Christ, it brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. Much worse than the first. My heart ached with grief when I discovered many years later, how she had abandoned the riches of Christ for the pitiful poverty of this world. And Jesus’ heart ached even more.
Let’s be vigilant: be alert less we are seduced away by the world. Let’s encourage one another daily in the faith; none of us are too far from falling.
‘Father, keep me watchful, keep me close, and keep me seeking you always. Amen.’
