Remedy for Greed – Jennifer Woodley
‘Rejoice always, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.’ 1 Thessalonians 5:16, 18 (NRSV).
If we are not walking closely with God and seeking first His Kingdom, there’s a nagging void of unfulfillment in our hearts. We desire to have something more, be caught up in something bigger and this disconnect from God draws us onto the descending path of greed.
It appears to be a thrilling alternative. But it is not. We passionately desire what doesn’t satisfy for very long, but leaves us hungering for more. When was the last time we felt restless and dissatisfied with our lot in life and resorted to retail therapy only to find that the thrill of the purchase soon lost its lustre and allurement?
However, when we are properly connected to God and earnestly seeking what He desires, the void is filled. When we centre ourselves on what we do have, on what God has given us and on the ways we can serve others with the life we get to live, then we will stop looking out for more.
Gratitude is the remedy for greed. When we fill our lives with prayer and thankfulness, giving no space for the restlessness spirit of ingratitude that hankers to rob us of praise and joy, our lives will be an overflowing fountain of goodness, gratitude and God-directed purpose. We will be known as contented people, rejoicing always in the God who has given us all good things to richly enjoy. Our satisfaction and fulfillment with what God has provided will be enough. For in Christ’s provision alone, we are enough.
