The Israelite's, God’s chosen people, have been wandering throughout the desert for forty years. They are on the threshold of entering into their promised land. But, they must go without their trusted leader. Moses is now 120 years old and has already been told by God that he cannot enter the long-looked-for land, and he knows death is imminent.
The people, who have had forty years of furnished meals, plenty of water, and clothes that did not wear out, are troubled by the prospect of change. The book of Deuteronomy records Moses’ final instructions and encouragement to this group of weary travelers. He even presents to them his replacement—Joshua. To all, he declared, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV
