Put on Love - Toni M. Babcock Do you ever wish people would just sit around a campfire and join the chorus of “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me” instead of tearing each other apart and being critical? The campfire after-glow would take place once folks agreed to “…put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” (Colossians 3:12 CSB) and move along toward honest accountability and active participation in fixing our most pressing problems. Not much evidence of that kind of warm fuzzy these days. Moving backward with grievance and fault-finding seem to be the new order.
God wants our demeanor to be one of “…bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another…” (Colossians 3:13 CSB). That takes humility, which seems to be in short supply these days. Bearing one another and forgiving one another involves listening from the heart and not using our grievances as a shield to avoid self-examination. We’ve all experienced the frustration when no one wants to hold themselves accountable for anything, but keep fomenting hatred, division, and rage because they feel like they’re entitled to.
The Bible says, “Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful,” (Colossians 3:14-15 CSB).
Imagine what this world would look like if we all put on love, and sat around a campfire like that.
