Promises of Prayer - Karen Pourbabaee
“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NAB
This verse can be simply reiterated as, live a life of prayer. Paul was instructing the Church at Thessalonica of the supreme importance of prayer. As believers, we should have no doubt about that admonition. There are a multitude of promises we can find in scripture related to the practice of prayer. Before looking at two of such promises, a brief look at the definition gives us greater insight. A promise is defined as an indication of future results. Synonyms include assurance, bond, and guarantee. Attached to our scripture-based prayer is God’s assurance, a view of future results, our hope!
One promise of prayer is safety: “But You, Lord, are a shield around me; my glory, You keep my head high. Whenever I cried out to the Lord, I was answered from the holy mountain. Whenever I lay down and slept, the Lord preserved me to rise again.” (Psalm 3:4-6) Herein is God’s prayer promise: when we pray while it is day, He keeps us secure both day and night. Psalm 3:9 clearly names that promise: “Safety comes from the Lord! Your blessing for Your people!”
Another promise attached to prayer is serenity: “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
When we live a life of prayer, God’s promises include safety and serenity.
What an honor, Lord, to know You and come to You in prayer. Give me the graces to live a life of prayer, to commune with You and be blessed with a life of safety and serenity while on earth, until we meet in heaven. Amen.
