“Peace Amidst Losses” - Sandra Fischer “The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD” ~ Job 1:21b ESV
Recently a friend of mine shared the losses in her life. Her husband died of a slow, debilitating disease; a few months later her mother died. Now, just a few weeks from that, she is caring for her aging father who has deteriorating health. She said, “Despite the losses, I sense a peace God is giving me.” I thought of Job. He acknowledged God’s sovereignty amidst his losses, “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD” Job 1:21 ESV
While we cannot understand God’s ways, we do know that losses, including the death of loved ones, are a reality we face. How do we sense peace like my friend has when that reality comes? By trusting our Sovereign, faithful God, who is over all of life’s circumstances. We can, like Job, say, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him” Job 13:15a KJV
We have another example far more compelling than Job. Jesus. He suffered and died on our behalf, so we might have peace with God through His death and resurrection. He assures us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives. . . Let not your hearts be troubled.” John 14:27 ESV
On the one hand, God took Jesus from the world and with the other He sent His Holy Spirit to indwell us as Christ followers, to seal us as His children, fill us with His power, comfort us and give us peace.
“LORD, help us to trust You, resting in the peace You give us now and forever”
