Our Spiritual GPS Part Two: The Way of Lectio Divina - Karen Pourbabaee “The revelation of Your words shed light.” Psalm 119:130 NABRE
We learn from Psalm 119:105 that God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path, and we must turn on that lamp by opening up His Word. God wants to shine His light directly upon His Word for you today. He’s in the business of revelation.
The saints-of-old used an ancient form of prayer called Lectio Divina (holy reading) that helped focus the light on what the Lord was trying to speak to them personally. It’s a way of praying with the Word or praying with scripture for change. St. Clement said simply, “Prayer is conversation with God.” Many believe prayer to be mere recitation of standard prayers, essentially a monologue. But if prayer is conversation, it must be a dialogue that includes both talking and listening.
We should expect the Lord to talk with us in His Word. That is what Lectio Divina is all about…giving God space and time to talk. It is a process of revelation of His Words for your life specifically.
The steps of Lectio Divina typically include:
Read: Slowly read a scripture passage, paying close attention to each word.
Reflect: Meditate on the scripture. What word, words, or idea stands out to you?
Relate: Pray/converse with God about the scripture and its meaning for you.
Rest: Sit quietly in God’s presence.
I’ve added these practical steps:
Respond: What does God’s revelation require of you? What will you do?
Record: Keep a prayer journal of what God has revealed and your response.
When your route is all mapped out, God will say “Start” at the proper time. Follow His voice to arrive at His intended destination. His light will shine all along your way.
