O Key of David! - Karen Pourbabaee “He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” Colossians 1:13 NAB
In Old Testament tradition, a key was a symbol of kingly power and authority. One task of the prime minister of the Davidic kingdom was to “carry the keys,” symbols of authority over the house of David. When Jesus arrived, according to Luke 1:32, He was given the throne of David, and of His kingdom there would be no end. Jesus would give the keys of the renewed kingdom of David to Peter to carry on the work of God’s kingdom. The apostles would continue the earthly work of the Messiah, to proclaim liberty to captives and minister the Word that sets them free. The Living Word, Jesus, delivers us out of the darkness of prison walls of all kinds.
Reflect upon what “prisons” you want to be set free from… anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, addiction, or some other prison. The Key of David came to unlock your prison doors, beginning with the prison of death, that you might be delivered from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of His beloved Son. Your eternal life is unlocked by the Key of David.
December is marked by dark winter nights, but stars appear and bring hope of an enlightening dawn. From God’s heaven, the Light of Light emerged. The Key of David opened the heavens and descended upon our earth in the guise of a newborn child, leaving the door open for all to follow Him one day.
An ancient O Antiphon prayer: O Key of David, O Royal Power of Israel controlling at Your will the gate of heaven: Come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead Your captive people into freedom. Amen.
Key of David: Isaiah 22:22, Rev 3:7.
