My Scary Surgery – Ken Ebright
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you cross rivers, you will not drown. When you walk through fire, you will not be burned, nor will the flames hurt you. Isaiah 43:2” (NCV)
I have been scared of doctors since I was seven years old. At that time, I was accidentally awake during my surgery and terrified as people dressed in blue scrubs held me down. Because of this traumatizing experience, I have carried a deep fear of needles and sharp knives. Just hearing people talk about their medical situations, stirs up feelings of dread in me.
Later in life, when I told I needed another surgery, I became lightheaded and almost passed out as the doctor explained all the things that could go wrong. The Sunday before my surgery, I heard the above verse at church. My emotions on edge due to my pending surgery, I literally felt like I was about to go through a fire. This led me to think about what happened in the book of Daniel when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down before a gold statue. Because they wanted to obey God, they were thrown into a fiery furnace as punishment. I was greatly encouraged when I recalled that an angel protected them while they were in the furnace.
Before surgery, a pastor prayed for me and reassured me that this time things would be different. In the end, I was able to face my fear and get through the surgery. I felt like I had survived the fire, the Lord getting me though. Today I realize that if the Lord can get me through my overwhelming fear of surgery, He will get me through any trial and He will do the same for you.
