My Abilities – Ken Ebright
“Trust the LORD with all your heart, and don’t depend on your own understanding. Remember the LORD in all you do, and he will give you success.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NCV)
Remembering the Lord and being successful as a result has proven true in my life. I have learned my skill and abilities are not my own; instead, they come from the Lord as I keep my eyes on Him.
I once worked a temporary factory job that created shampoo. The bottles would come down that assembly lane at a very fast pace. I would have half a second to get them into their box. Unsurprisingly, I often had a hard time getting those bottles into that box.
I was also in charge of lighting for a television shopping channel. Things went well there and I did the lights for four of the six years I worked there. Nonetheless, I left that job and went to work doing the lighting for a Christian television channel, where I thought God wanted me to be. However, it seemed no matter what I did, I just could not light the sets like I did when I was at my previous employer.
After a short stint being a courier, I took a job processing mail. The machine I use is like working back on that assembly line at the shampoo factory. Yet, God, must want me here because He has given me the ability, peace and desire to successfully do so for over ten years now.
It doesn’t make sense that I could handle one job and not the other. I think the answer comes in trusting the Lord and remembering him. When I started the mail processing job, I began to pray and ask for help. I didn’t do that at my other jobs. Over time, I have realized our abilities don’t come from ourselves, but from the Lord.
Hence, give your abilities to the Lord and he will give you success.
