Man is God’s Lamp by Robert Schaetzle “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15 RSV
No one would purposely want to live life all crunched up inside a bushel basket. Especially if we are called to live life for Jesus. Yet, our Lord’s great commission too often doesn’t appear very active within the heart of His church.
Proclaiming life for Jesus does not mean we need to walk about every day with a sandwich board over our shoulders telling the world ‘Jesus is coming.’ But, our faith walk should display some degree of difference, a life of radiance that reflects God’s presence and authority within. In Christ, there is no darkness! Why then does the power of darkness in this unbelieving world, appear to control the hearts of so many people of faith? Darkness must not dominate!
Our Lord’s Spirit abides in every believer, but I feel at times, our Lord looks out over His church much as when He rode into Jerusalem. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! Matthew 23:37
But we can be different. We can ask our Father to help us and to shine through us.
Father, help us to let your light shine before the lost. Take over my life and shine brightly through my born-again Spirit with boldness. Guide me and help me to live a life that reflects Jesus, sharing the Good News as the light of hope in this lost world.
