Making Room for Today in Your Schedule Cheryl Weber
A calendar notification on my laptop one morning read, "Today." I was amused, glad I had made time for today. But how many of us make room for today in our schedules? Or do we race from one commitment to the next, bypassing the joys and blessings of the moment? Perhaps we put "Yesterday" on our schedules, mulling over past mistakes or longing to live in some bygone, more carefree era. Maybe we put "Tomorrow" on our calendars, wishing for some future event that sounds more exciting or fulfilling than the present. Or perhaps we fear what lies ahead. The Lord wants us to live fully with him through each moment, experiencing today's joys and sorrows, savoring his presence, following in his footsteps. The writer of Ecclesiastes says it's not wise to long for, "the good old days" (Eccl. 7:10 NLT). In Isaiah 43:19, God told Israel that yes, he'd delivered them long ago from the Egyptian army, but now they were to look for the new thing he was doing. God was calling them to fresh beginnings. Jesus urged, "Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with the hard things when the time comes" (Matt. 6:23-24 The Message Bible). As we engage with today, let's join the Apostle Paul who declared, "But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 3:13b-14 NLT). PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to give the past and the future to you while fully living today as I trust you in all things. Amen
